We know studying abroad online will not replace studying abroad in person. Traveling to another country is irreplaceable; the sights, the food, the sounds, the interaction, and tons of experiences rooted in discovering diversity and similarities in different cultures.

The goal of study abroad online is to provide students with the ability to access the world (and all it has to offer) from anywhere with local experts and great quality teachers.

On top of that, the world went virtual in 2020 and having the experience of online classes, online internships, and leadership positions is good preparation for an uncertain future.

What is global perspective?

When developing a global perspective or learning a new language, reactions and thinking processes change, and an individual begins to relate their thinking on an international scale. The same happens when interacting with different cultures.

The importance of acquiring a global perspective is that it decenters an individual and opens up a global lens. It teaches you to be analytical of your own upbringing and opens up critical thinking that motivates questioning privilege, disproportional effects of capitalism or colonialism.

Learning to focus on how the world impacts others rather than centering yourself through a limited perspective is the first step to become a global citizen.

Alternatives to spending time with the Global Community:

Downtime activities

Cultural events like cooking classes, virtual tours, dancing classes, Kahoot games, and international movie nights.

Virtual study groups with other classmates

This is a great way to dive deeper into what you’re studying and truly understand the importance of a global perspective as it relates to your education and career. You’ll be able to engage with other students regarding course material and further dive into what you’re learning — and how it applies to each student.

Schedule virtual hangouts to learn about each other.

Learn the local language

One of the best and most effective ways to learn a language is to immerse yourself and speak it frequently, especially with native speakers.

Plus, learning from a native-speaking instructor who lives where the language is spoken is a unique advantage in language study — so it’s undeniably helpful that this aspect of study abroad can be replicated virtually!

Engage with staff members and try to practice at meetings and other events.

Connect with your professors

Like traveling, how you approach your learning is going to control the outcome, so be as open and willing to connect with your professors and get to know them! Ask what books they recommend or the best ways to spend your time when you travel to areas they are familiar with or from.

Try to absorb as much knowledge as possible for when you can travel to the places you are learning about.

Don’t forget that Online courses are just as enriching as in-person courses, it all depends on your approach and adaptability. Take in as much info as possible for when you can travel.
