Global Studies. Why?
Emma Rosen
I am forever inspired by my heroes, both real and fictional. Madeleine Albright, Suki Kim, Elizabeth Bennet, Malala Yousafzai and more all come to mind as incredible women who have world views that have left an indelible imprint on my mind. I am also inspired by the people in my life who haven’t had the opportunities that have been afforded to me but who have always wanted to leave their mark.
Global studies seem an imperative path for people who wish to make a change in the world. How can one make an impact if you don’t first seek to understand and learn from the people and places that many wish to lend a hand to? My travels and studies have also informed the way I see my hometown and home country. I feel more able to make a difference at home after seeing them from this new lens of global knowledge.
I do not think I will ever be satisfied until I have tried my utmost to make a difference, wherever that might be, and however, that might come to fruition. I am a helper by nature, and with this degree, I hope to go on to do just that. Throughout my time in this program, I have focused on the field of ethics, specifically military ethics. My dream job would be to closely study military ethics around the world, and especially at home in the United States, in order to help build a new code of ethical warfare that protects as many people as possible. War might be an inevitable evil but at the very least if I can help protect civilians and minimize collateral damage I know I would be a proud global studies graduate.
Sometimes this field gives you more questions than answers, but that is ultimately the point. No one person has all the answers, nobody has a perfectly correct point of view. But if we can learn from as many people as possible perhaps we can cobble together our own answers to these infinite questions and proceed with an open mind and an open heart.
